Before & After: Turn an Old Cabinet into a Kid’s Kitchen

Posted on October 11, 2019November 9, 2019 by Matt Furtado

With ever-changing requirements and news additions in your household, some of the furniture or materials lying around your house are bound to become obsolete but before you decide to dump or discard these possessions, here’s a fun and useful way you can upcycle an old cabinet.

Things you will Require

  1. Old Cabinet
  2. Sandpaper
  3. Tools
  4. Tape measure
  5. Scissors
  6. Any Paint of your choice
  7. Fabric for Curtain
  8. Foam Sheets of Red and Black colour to make the stove
  9. A Miniature Kitchen Set, complete with utensils, cutlery, plates and glasses
  10. Hooks
  11. Apron (In Kid-size)
  12. White Paint
  13. Primer
  14. Curtain Wire Spring Cord

Directions:

According to the size and compartments available in your cabinet, plan as to what all can be added to the kitchen.

A compartment which has enough height can be converted into a fridge, a compact square or rectangular compartment can be made into an oven. Designate a workplace, which would be the area where you would have kept your television set.

Remove all the accessories like knobs, hooks and handles and save them for later. Lightly sand the surface of the cabinet and wipe it off with a cloth.

Cutting out a window would make the cabinet more authentic and also allow for light to come through to the workplace. Using a tape measure, draw lines alongside which you can cut off the back of the cabinet. Make sure to not cut too much out so as to comprise the frame structure. Using a power saw, cut alongside the lines, once done, remove the piece of wood. Sand the edges of the frame really well. The piece of wood you removed can be upcycled to be made into a cutting board. Cut down the piece into a smaller size one which can be kept in the workstation of the cabinet. Sand its edges well and then paint it with brown paint.

Next, apply a coat of primer on the cabinet and let it dry, this will increase the longevity of the cabinet.

Once the primer is dry, you can go ahead and paint the cabinet. Use different colours suitable for different areas. Paint the fridge and oven door white or silver and the inside of the oven, black. Take care to paint the crevices and nook and corners too using a small brush.

While the paint dries, you can make the curtain for the window. Take any fabric of your choice, preferably one which goes with the colour of the paint. Measure and cut the fabric according to the size of the cabinet and stitch both ends. One end should be stitched in such a manner that the curtain cord can pass through it. Next, put two nails on each side of the window frame. Put the curtain cord through the curtain and place the two ends of the cord on the nails.

Put a hook on one of the walls of the cabinet and hang the apron on it, you can even hang oven mittens or a chalkboard which can be used to write the grocery list or menu for the day.

Fix all the knobs, handles and hooks, that you had removed back on to the cabinet.

Next for making the stove, cut circles out of the foam sheets and stick them with glue on a black foam sheet. Stick this sheet on to the cabinet. With a marker, you can draw stove knobs on the edge of the cabinet or even fix rotatable knobs.

Finally, take out the miniature utensils and place them in the drawers and cabinets. Arrange them according to their utility. Place the cutting board on the workstation along with a miniature toy knife.

This old cabinet turned kid’s kitchen is sure to be amusing for children and will keep them occupied for hours.…
