11 SOLAR POWERED GADGET INVENTIONS THAT WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

Posted on November 1, 2019November 13, 2019 by Matt Furtado

Sun is a source of inexhaustible energy. The technology to harness solar power was invented in the mid 18th century. Since then, research and development of solar energy capture has been groundbreaking. With enough advancement of our technology, the applications of solar power are vast. Sky is the limit really. There are tons of products available in market, which comes with Solar charging technology like dive watch powered by solar system,  Solar backpacks etc. Solar technology might give rise to a whole new era of technology. Here are a few gadgets that will likely be used in the future:

Solar street lights

Roads are the most common way of travel. The United States alone has 6 million miles of road. Every road needs streetlights to aid visibility during the night. So just imagine the number of streetlights in the world. AND the amount of power needed to keep those street lights operating. All that power is currently generated by burning hundreds of tons of fossil fuels. Using solar powered street lights is a large scale power saving idea.

Floating solar panels in the oceans

Presently, countries in the tropical region with a lot of unused land area are able to extract solar power. This is naturally because solar panels are of large sizes and you need a lot of them to obtain viable amounts of energy. But what about the seas and oceans? Water bodies cover 70% of the earth’s surface. That is a humongous area of untapped sunlight. It is a brilliant idea that is already in operation. Although, too many solar panels in the ocean will disrupt the oceanic ecosystem.

Solar air conditioners

Summers are getting too damn hot, especially with global warming and climate change. Owning an Air conditioner is now a necessity rather than luxury. Someone was smart enough to figure out a way to fight fire with fire. Using the sun’s energy to power air conditioners to escape the sun’s heat is quite a flex.

Solar water heaters

Geysers are going to be termed as ancient water heating devices in the near future. Solar water heaters are already being used in many countries. Appropriately sized solar panels are placed on the roofs to capture sunlight. These convert energy into heat energy used to raise the temperature of water.

Solar bicycles

Internal combustion engines will soon be replaced by electric vehicles with the motive of saving our planet. Solar bicycles are also an emission free mode of transport. The bicycle can drive itself forward during the day with the rider only needing to steer and brake. During the night time when there is no sunlight, one can simply pedal their way across town. Nifty innit?

Solar illuminated balloons

This a cute idea brought forward by some pretty innovative minds. It is basically a balloon that floats about all day collecting sunlight. As the sun sets, it detects the loss of light in the environment and glows. Don’t you think this would be an amazing sight? One can tie them up and use them instead of conventional light bulbs, or allow them to float about in recreational areas like public parks and jogging tracks.

Solar paint

An aesthetic application of using solar energy, it is deeply in the prototype phase as of now. The idea is to combine nanotechnology and photovoltaic effect to synthesis solar paint. This paint will be able to absorb the sun’s radiation and light up the walls during the night. Even more advanced prototypes can even change the colour that they emit making it a pretty cool trick.

Solar backpacks

Imagine you’re driving down to work and suddenly remember that you forgot to carry your laptop charger along. You won’t have that problem if you carry a solar bag. It has got a build in battery that charges when exposed to the sun. You can also use it to charge other devices. This is great news for travellers as well. Their phone will never run out of juice as they navigate through unknown territories. Nor will their cameras die out, unlimited photographs!

Solar buildings

There are plans sanctioned by the government in countries like China to invest in research of solar powered buildings. Self sustaining buildings would do wonders in metropolitan cities like New York, Beijing, HongKong etc. The outer surface of the buildings will be replaced by absorbing solar panels instead of reflective glass.

Solar powered wireless charger

Achieve a next level of convince with a wireless solar charger. All devices in the future will be equipped with wireless charging. This handy device is supportable and super handy.

Transmitting solar power wirelessly from space

An ambitious, yet scientifically possible phenomenon. This project will require a heavy fund for multiple governments to successfully start research and development. Aim high they say, in this case, quite literally.

This is just a glimpse of how the future might look like. There is much more to witness as time skips. I daresay, the future of solar energy sure seems bright.…

Turn Your Home Into a Plant Paradise With These Indoor Plants

Posted on October 28, 2019November 9, 2019 by Matt Furtado

Indoor plants can instantly liven up your living space and they are natural air purifiers, which comes as a boon in these times of pollution and deteriorating air quality.

Indoor plants are less temperamental when compared to outdoor plants but they need to be watered regularly and should have access to ample sunlight in most cases. Be sure to research the plant you intend to buy, regarding its maintenance and care to help your green thrive. Also, take care as to the compatibility of the plant with your climate and environment.

There are many creative ways you can add some greenery to your interior, you can add potted plants in the corners of your room, succulents on tabletops, hanging plants from the ceiling, rack of plants. You can even consider growing a miniature herb garden on your kitchen window sill.

Plants which are of larger size may need a drainage rack to be kept under the pot so any excess water can be collected in the tray instead of spilling over on the floor.

Take special notice if your pots have drainage points, as much as plants require water, excess water can rot the roots. A good sign of over-water plants is the yellowing of the leaves.

Every once in awhile gentle tilling should be done in the potted plants to help the roots breathe and to soften hardened soil.

Here are 7 plants you can include as interior decoration in your home

Bonsai

Bosai is an aesthetically pleasing creation with its origin in Japan. Perfect for homes with limited space They are more expensive and need a bit more of maintenance when compared to a traditional houseplant but the elegance that they lend to a room is unmatched. They require a reasonable amount of sunlight and so they are best positioned near a window sill.

Spider Plant

They are extremely easy to take care of and require minimal attention hence one of the lowest maintenance indoor plants out there. They look best in a simple pot so as the highlight remains on the unique patterns of its leaves.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboo makes for a delightful addition to any environment and the fact that they grow straight in water with minimal sunlight make it an easy plant to have even if you do not have green fingers. Do take care to refill the water every now and then

Mini cacti

These are great if you do not consider yourself a gardener and you can set aside your stereotypes about cacti about being dull and thorny. These days you can find colourful and different sized and shaped cacti and not mention they are stress-free plants which are not temperamental about being watered.

Mini succulents are also a great addition to your interior decor. Since mini cacti and succulents are miniature-sized, you can virtually keep them anywhere, on your desks, bathroom, nightstand, dining table.

Cast Iron Plant

Aloe Vera

The Aloe vera plant owing to its similar looks to the average cacti may look like it is low maintenance but it requires a bit more attention than that. Windowsills are the best location for them as they do they like their bit of water and sunlight. What’s more, they are an excellent remedy for burns and bruises and can come in handy for home remedies.

Coffee Plant

These plants not only beautify your home but will also provide enough coffee beans to roast and brew a cup of coffee for yourself. They are easy to maintain and are quick to show any distress especially if not watered properly and will return back to normal once they have been properly watered.

Mint Plant

Mint plants can either be bought or you can use cuttings from store-bought mint leaves with the stem intact. Just take a few cuttings and plant them in soil and drizzle some water over it. Over a week, the cuttings will grow out roots and you would have garden-fresh mint in your own kitchen. Transfer these plants to a bigger pot to allow for space to grow.

You can grow many other herbs in the same manner such as coriander, parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary, sage.

You could plant a herb garden in pots which come together as a set.…

Ten Things To Know Before Your First Cruise

Posted on October 20, 2019November 9, 2019 by Matt Furtado

A vacation on a cruise feels like a risky endeavor for some of you. A humongous vessel, carrying countless no of people, one can’t be blamed for having flashbacks to Titanic. Then there are things like accommodation, food, a general vibe that worry the most. Many folks hesitate to take the forward step and be a part of their first cruise vacation. You would rather prefer to go to some place on land— even if it’s unfamiliar— than go on a cruise. The thing is cruise vacations are awesome. And you should set aside any trepidations about it and try it if you are interested . There are just certain things as a first timer that you should be aware of. Here are Ten Things To Know Before Your First Cruise.

Choose Not the Best Cruise Line—But the One You Like

There are so many to choose from. So many that are considered the best. But it all comes down to what you prefer. The so called best ones are expensive deals. Do not fall for some travel agent’s word unless you really want what they are selling. Read carefully the cruise brochure and make sure that all the facilities they offer are in-line with your interests.

Make Sure Your Trip is During Non Peak Times

Cruise vacations hit their peak crowd when good weather combined with holiday season falls. This is also the costliest period for cruise vacations. So, for a much cheaper deal, go on vacations during non-peak times. Don’t worry that cheap cruise vacation comes at the expense of terrible weather. It’s not actually. It’s usually chilly when the cruise vacation crowd numbers are not at the peak. But it’s nothing unmanageably awful. Plus, you get to enjoy a cruise vacation with uncrowded ports.

Cell Phone Coverage

Cell phones these days are like a top priority. We take it with ourselves anywhere we go, let alone a cruise trip. You need to know that you just can’t go for a cruise trip and expect all your data/call services to be the same as it is when on land. When there is a signal to make a call, it’s coming from an at-sea service provider, and they aren’t cheap. So you should inform yourself well enough about the call/data packages and cell phone coverage these cruise services are providing.

The Right Cabin For You

The cabin is the room you are allotted in a cruise ship, not unlike a luxury hotel. But choosing the right cabin is an even more difficult task than choosing a room in a luxury hotel. Someone who can get sea sick, for that person, cabin location is really important. Lower and central area of the ship is more suited for such people. Some people highly prefer sunlight entering their room. For them, upper-deck cabins are the ones they should look for.

Give Cruise Insurance Priority

Going on a cruise could turn out to be a way, way more expensive trip if you face stuff like weather uncertainties, trip cancellation, and god forbid— accidental drowning. So, to somewhat cover these scenarios, it’s vital that one buys a good travel insurance policy.

Carry Some Cash

Yes, most of your cost is covered when you pay for your cruise ship. But it’s a nice practice to carry some cash with you. It’s especially vital when you are shopping, as some gift shops don’t accept credit cards. It’s also very useful when tipping. Now, don’t think of tipping as a waste of money. Cruise line employees are some of the hardest working professionals out there. They deserve a little token of your appreciation. Let it be in the form of a tip.

Pack Efficiently

It is a headache inducing task for the most, but packing is like an integral part of any trip, let alone on a cruise. Make sure to cover essential documents like cruise documents, passport & visas, copy of medicine prescription you are taking, credit cards. Other essentials include sunglasses, maps, reading materials.

Outlet Adapters In the Cruise

Carrying proper outlet adapters on a cruise trip is very important. Cruises vary in design when it comes to the plug socket. Chances are the adapter you usually use is not a fit in the cruise’s plug socket. Therefore, make sure you carry a backup adapter with you. Checking the cruise brochures thoroughly will also give you relevant information regarding the type of adapter you should go with.

Drink On Port to Save Cash Versus Ship

What’s a cruise vacation without a little booze, right? Well, here’s a valuable tip then: Don’t drink on the ship, wait for the port. On the ship, beverages are pretty costly. The port offers you drink at a cheaper rate and will provide a lot of options compared to on board.

Evening Entertainment Possibilities

Don’t miss the communal experience of watching a movie. Just like watching a movie on the big screen theatre, but it’s on a cruise now. They offer both indoor and outdoor theatre experience. Outdoor theatre, among pools, night skies(or bright skies if it’s daytime), and cozy environment is especially unique. Other forms of evening entertainment that will keep you engaged are the jazz club, night club, comedy clubs, bars.

Conclusion

You have to take care of some things before and after you get on a cruise, but that shouldn’t let you from enjoying your experience. Cruising is one of the most relaxing travelling experiences you can have. And by being slightly attentive to these minute things, you are just ensuring that you will have a wonderful experience without any roadblocks.…

Before & After: Turn an Old Cabinet into a Kid’s Kitchen

Posted on October 11, 2019November 9, 2019 by Matt Furtado

With ever-changing requirements and news additions in your household, some of the furniture or materials lying around your house are bound to become obsolete but before you decide to dump or discard these possessions, here’s a fun and useful way you can upcycle an old cabinet.

Things you will Require

  1. Old Cabinet
  2. Sandpaper
  3. Tools
  4. Tape measure
  5. Scissors
  6. Any Paint of your choice
  7. Fabric for Curtain
  8. Foam Sheets of Red and Black colour to make the stove
  9. A Miniature Kitchen Set, complete with utensils, cutlery, plates and glasses
  10. Hooks
  11. Apron (In Kid-size)
  12. White Paint
  13. Primer
  14. Curtain Wire Spring Cord

Directions:

According to the size and compartments available in your cabinet, plan as to what all can be added to the kitchen.

A compartment which has enough height can be converted into a fridge, a compact square or rectangular compartment can be made into an oven. Designate a workplace, which would be the area where you would have kept your television set.

Remove all the accessories like knobs, hooks and handles and save them for later. Lightly sand the surface of the cabinet and wipe it off with a cloth.

Cutting out a window would make the cabinet more authentic and also allow for light to come through to the workplace. Using a tape measure, draw lines alongside which you can cut off the back of the cabinet. Make sure to not cut too much out so as to comprise the frame structure. Using a power saw, cut alongside the lines, once done, remove the piece of wood. Sand the edges of the frame really well. The piece of wood you removed can be upcycled to be made into a cutting board. Cut down the piece into a smaller size one which can be kept in the workstation of the cabinet. Sand its edges well and then paint it with brown paint.

Next, apply a coat of primer on the cabinet and let it dry, this will increase the longevity of the cabinet.

Once the primer is dry, you can go ahead and paint the cabinet. Use different colours suitable for different areas. Paint the fridge and oven door white or silver and the inside of the oven, black. Take care to paint the crevices and nook and corners too using a small brush.

While the paint dries, you can make the curtain for the window. Take any fabric of your choice, preferably one which goes with the colour of the paint. Measure and cut the fabric according to the size of the cabinet and stitch both ends. One end should be stitched in such a manner that the curtain cord can pass through it. Next, put two nails on each side of the window frame. Put the curtain cord through the curtain and place the two ends of the cord on the nails.

Put a hook on one of the walls of the cabinet and hang the apron on it, you can even hang oven mittens or a chalkboard which can be used to write the grocery list or menu for the day.

Fix all the knobs, handles and hooks, that you had removed back on to the cabinet.

Next for making the stove, cut circles out of the foam sheets and stick them with glue on a black foam sheet. Stick this sheet on to the cabinet. With a marker, you can draw stove knobs on the edge of the cabinet or even fix rotatable knobs.

Finally, take out the miniature utensils and place them in the drawers and cabinets. Arrange them according to their utility. Place the cutting board on the workstation along with a miniature toy knife.

This old cabinet turned kid’s kitchen is sure to be amusing for children and will keep them occupied for hours.…
